Denkmaltag: Scharfer Turm zur Besichtigung geöffnet
Am Rhein 1, 56321 Rhens
On the occasion of the Day of Open Monuments, the Kaiser-Ruprecht Brotherhood opens the doors of the Sharp Tower in Rhens.
About the tower:
Under Archbishop Friedrich III. of Cologne (1370-1414), Rhens received a multi-towered city fortification at the end of the 14th century. Allegedly started in 1396, the "very beautiful wall" was only completed under his successor Dietrich II in 1424. On the southern side of its Rhine front stands the mighty "Sharp Tower," a three-story round tower with a lower wall thickness of more than three meters. Accessible via the city wall, a spiral staircase located within the wall thickness leads from the middle floor to a partially preserved latrine and from the third floor to the defensive platform. In 1904 and during the 1980s, the significant building was extensively renovated and now houses a museum room of the Kaiser Ruprecht Brotherhood of Rhens e. V. and the "Towers' Room".
