Turm-Haus auf Schönburg
55430 Oberwesel-Dellhofen
The city fortifications on the Rhine side of the southern suburb were secured by two round towers; on the one hand the Red Tower and on the other hand the tower Haus Schönburg can be named here. Already the name of the tower indicates that in its area once the town palace of the Schönburgs was to be located. The round tower rests centrally on the city wall, so that the battlements run through the middle of the tower. The round-arched battlements on both sides can still be seen today. Its diameter is almost six meters. Moreover, with a height of nine meters, this tower is also smaller than the other towers on the Rhine-side city fortifications. Inside the tower there is a small stone staircase that leads to the defense platform. From the outside, the tower is lined on the upper floor or on the defense platform by a round arch frieze made of light sandstone and a crenellation with beveled embrasures above it. The pointed-arched windows inserted later on the Rhine side are conspicuous, as is the octagonal pewter wreath of the observation platform, which adjoins above the round-arched frieze on sand-lime stone consoles.
