Schloss Monrepos

Schloss Monrepos, 56567 Neuwied

Widow's residence built in 1909 for Princess Marie of Nassau.

Built in 1757 by the Prince of Wied-Neuwied, the main part of Monrepos Castle in Neuwied is now completely gone after a controlled burn in 1969. Instead, the “Villa Waldheim,” constructed in 1909 right next to the castle as a widow's residence for Princess Marie of Nassau, now serves as the attraction on the site. The villa on the right bank of the Rhine has housed the “Archaeological Research Center and Museum for Human Behaviour Evolution” since 1986. The exhibition "MenschlICHes VERSTEHEN" allows visitors to experience research results. Throughout the year, a diverse guided tour program is also offered.
Two annex buildings can be visited from the outside: the former guesthouse for the Swedish Crown Prince Gustav V and the “Küchenhaus.” Additionally, parts of the surrounding landscape park have been preserved, including exotic tree and plant species as well as embedded individual monuments.
