It was set up by the Burg-Verein e. V. Eltville and is an impressive reminder of the inventor of printing with movable type, Johannes Gutenberg, who lived and worked in Eltville in the 15th century. The historic Florentine printing press is located in the castle store, which opened in 2012. Public printing days are held here several times a year, when original prints are printed as they were in Gutenberg's day. The Historical Collection in the Domherrenkammer contains valuable documents on Eltville's town history. Among other things, it houses early historical finds, valuable engravings with views of Eltville and coins. In addition, there is a viewing platform on the top floor of the castle tower. Those who make it to the top are rewarded with a magnificent view over Eltville am Rhein, the Rheingau and Rheinhessen as far as the Rhine-Main region. The medieval castle complex dates back to the 14th century and served as the residence of the archbishops and electors of Mainz for 150 years. Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the modern art of printing, received his only tribute here during his lifetime in 1465. Civil weddings in the elegant ambience of the Elector's Hall make weddings an unforgettable experience. The magnificent rose gardens in the castle garden also earned Eltville the title of Rose City in 1988 and transform the castle grounds into a fragrant sea of blossoms in early summer.
